Me

I am a techno-optimist in NYC.

Optimist because I think the world can be much better than it is now within our lifetime.

Techno because I think technology will play a role in this transition.

I try to be thoughtful as well as passionate about Artificial Intelligence, Data Privacy, Mathematical Statistics, and Data Journalism.

Profession

I currently work as a Machine Learning Engineer, consulting for a Health Insurance company. Previously I have worked as a Data Scientist at Health-tech startups in Scandinavia. Before that, I studied Statistics in Sweden and in South Africa.

Looking forward, I see myself working towards a technological future that supports empathy, equality, democracy, and innovation.

Blog

Writing is powerful, both as an individual reflection tool, but also as a record of what was thought and when. I started my blog in 2016 against the backdrop of the Rhodes Must Fall movement at the University of Cape Town where I was a statistics student. I wrote to try to engage with history as a method to explain the crazy, racist, unequal world I found myself in.

This blog is a collection of my thoughts and self-education research on topics related to science and technology, colonialism, privacy, technology and more.

Back then I wrote:

“I see our generation’s struggle as a existential struggle, working to undo complex systems of power which dominate nearly every aspect of our lives.”

I still agree with this sentiment, though my early thoughts were much more colored by identity markers than what I would choose to write now. Nevertheless, they serve as a record of the late 2010s and have proved useful in my own thinking.

The pieces on Statistics and Eugenics also have recieved press in Nautilus Magazine.
